The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Smog Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels
Several parts of the city registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe limit set by the WHO.

Firecracker Ban and Current Developments
Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that covers the metropolis as colder weather begins.
However recently, the newly elected regional administration appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".
Judicial Ruling and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health activists, the court approved the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered pollution peaking around midnight to the most severe levels seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Regional Effects
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.
Persistent Pollution Problem
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.
Around Diwali, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been documented to spike to 70% higher the worst records ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
This crisis in the city is caused by a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.
Public Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple research.
These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to cancer.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand premature fatalities each year in Delhi.
