A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a Amazon founder.
